THE PROBLEM
Challenges in Translating Traffic Rules into Safe Driving Behaviors
Survey with 24 drivers in 8 states found that:
“Reacting to complex scenarios” is the most challenging part of the driver’s knowledge test.
Understanding “Right of way” is essential for a good driver and need to review regularly to maintain safe driving practices.
THE SOLUTION
The interactive e-learning course on Articulate Rise uses scenario-based learning to help learners understand and properly respond to the 4 main yielding situations.
Learner Drivers: People who are currently studying driving knowledge.
New Drivers: People already possess a driver's license but may need more practice or refinement of their driving skills.
We applied scenario-based learning and embedded real-life yielding situations to help learners understand the context and consequences of their decisions.
We incorporated driver’s perspective images into the modules to enhance learners' understanding of how to observe their surroundings. This viewpoint helps learners more effectively transfer knowledge to real-world driving, such as identifying oncoming traffic and pedestrians at corners.
We added matching exercises alongside multiple-choice questions to deepen learners' understanding. Diverse quiz formats boost engagement, test various cognitive skills, and reduce guessing, leading to more accurate assessments.
REFLECTION
Learning Through Diverse Mediums: Although this project was on the same topic of driving knolwedge, it was developed on an e-learning platform, using scenario-based learning to teach yielding rules in an immersive way. I learned the importance of selecting the right medium based on specific learning goals, content, and audience needs to maximize effectiveness.
Foreseeing the Outcome: A key takeaway from this project is the importance of visualizing both positive and negative outcomes for learners. Participants rated the most effective aspect of the course as seeing the consequences, like car crashes, resulting from incorrect analysis of yielding situations. This approach significantly heightened their awareness and engagement, making the learning experience more impactful.
